Struggling With Low Libido in Menopause? HRT Can Help

Menopause is a time of change for women. Some changes are good (no more PMS symptoms!) while others are harder to adjust to, including a decrease in your libido. Sex just doesn’t seem as enjoyable as it used to, and you don’t even want to do it very often.
The good news is that there’s a reliable treatment that has proven to make a difference: hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
At Woodstock Family Practice & Urgent Care, we understand how important your hormone levels are to your health and your everyday life. Here’s how HRT can restore your sexual function and desire to pre-menopause levels.
What causes low libido?
The most likely culprit of your decreased libido is the change in hormonal levels that accompany menopause, including fluctuations in estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone.
Estrogen helps keep your vaginal tissue healthy and lubricated, so lower levels mean you can experience vaginal dryness and potential shrinking of vaginal tissues, along with sleep and mood disturbances.
While women have less testosterone than men, declining levels can affect their arousal and desire as well. Lower levels of progesterone are also thought to lead to lower sex drive and satisfaction.
Menopause can also bring more hits to your libido with increased stress and fatigue, along with body image issues.
How does HRT help?
OK, enough bad news. The good news is that HRT can restore your hormones so your libido can return to pre-menopausal levels.
Estrogen replacement therapy (we may include progesterone if you still have your uterus) increases blood flow to your vagina, resulting in improved lubrication and comfort along with improved sleep and mood changes and less hot flashes.
Testosterone replacement therapy has also been proven effective at increasing libido and heightening arousal.
Here at Woodstock Family Practice & Urgent Care, we use bioidentical hormones, which are a more natural form of hormone replacement, with fewer side effects, than synthetic hormones.
Will HRT work for you?
We evaluate you individually as a patient to make sure HRT is safe and appropriate for your situation. Then we tailor a solution to your needs, including any other health conditions you may be dealing with.
We generally start with low doses of replacement hormones and work our way up as necessary, depending on the effectiveness of the treatment.
